A 71-year-old man who lives in the retirement community, The Villages, was arrested Thursday for allegedly sexually assaulting an autistic man in a Publix parking lot.
Sumter County Sheriff’s deputies say the victim’s father called them after his son told him about the incident which occurred on the afternoon of Jan. 19. The father told police his son has been diagnosed with Autism and has the mental capacity of a fifth or sixth grader.
The victim told deputies that while he was on his lunch break, he was approached by a man in his 60’s or 70’s. He said the man lured him into the car, drove through the parking lot, and parked the vehicle. He said the man sexually assaulted him and after he stopped, he exposed himself to him.
At that point, he was able to get out of the car and run into the Publix store. He said he did not know the suspect.
Surveillance video taken in the parking lot and at Publix confirmed the victim’s story. Police were able to identify the suspect as Edmund Peter Rossy and they brought him in for an interview.
After the interview, Rossy was arrested and charged with battery, sexual assault and lewd and lascivious molestation.
